"Zinc-air technology must offer similar performance to Lithium-ion at a significantly lower cost"

In this interview, we speak with Daniel Gonzalez, Product Developer at CEGASA Energía, the world leader in industrial zinc-air batteries. CEGASA’s approach to providing cost-effective solutions is built on decades of experience, efficiency, and continuous innovation. As a key player in the HIPERZAB project, CEGASA leads the analysis of current Energy Storage Systems (ESS), defining specifications for the ERZAB (Electrically Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery) system and comparing its technological positioning with competing technologies. Additionally, CEGASA evaluates the circularity of their production processes, aiming to enhance sustainability through the use of new materials developed within HIPERZAB, as well as identifying recycling and valorization opportunities.
What are the required specifications for the ERZAB system?
"Currently, the electrically rechargeable battery market is dominated by Li-ion technology, an area where CEGASA is a European benchmark with scalable stationary energy storage solutions. To compete with Li-ion, Zn-air technology must achieve similar performance in terms of battery life, cycle efficiency, and cyclability, while significantly lowering costs. HIPERZAB is tackling this challenge by introducing breakthrough technologies and low-cost materials that are environmentally friendly and free of critical raw materials."
How is it possible to implement a circular economy in the production process?
"The ERZAB system inherently supports circularity by storing energy that would otherwise be wasted, closing a large environmental loop. On a smaller scale, circularity can be seen in our material choices. For example, zinc, a key component of HIPERZAB, is highly recyclable, as demonstrated in the galvanizing industry where it is reused extensively. At CEGASA, we also work with suppliers to recycle inputs like cardboard, cores, and plastic offcuts, feeding them back into our production process. HIPERZAB is taking this concept further by analyzing ways to enhance circularity from the very start, ensuring minimal impact across the product lifecycle."
As Daniel Gonzalez highlighted, achieving Li-ion-like performance at a lower cost is crucial for the success of Zn-air batteries. CEGASA´s commitment to innovation and circularity is evident through their efforts within HIPERZAB, setting an example for sustainable practices in the energy storage sector. With a focus on both performance and environmental impact, HIPERZAB is driving the future of zinc-air technology, positioning it as a strong competitor in the renewable energy landscape. Keep an eye on CEGASA’s progress as they continue to redefine energy storage.
